When Sleep Is The Elusive Butterfly…

Added on May 18, 2011

So you lie there each night waiting for dreams to find their way into your exhausted brain.  You’ve tossed and turned, counted sheep till the cows come home (you’ve counted them, too!). You watch the hours tick by wondering how you’ll get through the next day…again!

Perhaps your doctor told you that you need to stress less. Well that’s not happening, you think as you gather up your 3 year old in one arm, and your briefcase with take home work in the other.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could master a way to take it all in your stride, not let the ups and downs of life drag you along? So that when your head touches the pillow each night, dreamland is only a minute or two away.

Well you can!  Two related techniques can help insomnia and are supported by scientific research: Mindfulness and Meditation.

Mindfulness is a method for calming the mind and body and bringing you back to the present moment. Just stop, close your eyes and listen to the sounds around you, not thinking about or analyzing them, just listening to what’s in the present moment. After 2 or 3 minutes, tune into how you feel, how this simple and brief technique has slowed you down and brought you back to the present. This is mindful being and there are numerous ways to incorporate mindfulness into your life to help improve your sleep.

Meditation is a technique that has been around for thousands of years, but scientific research provides evidence that it promotes health by
causing physiological changes that result in reduction in heart and respiration rates, blood pressure and stress hormones. This can make you feel more relaxed and better able to cope. Research shows that regular practice of meditation can be twice as effect as other stress reduction techniques in reducing stress and anxiety, thereby improving sleep.
