Positivity & the Gift of Gratitude

Added on June 1, 2011

People often ask me to help them become more positive.

There are lots of tools to help you increase your positivity but research shows that one of the most powerful methods is also one of the simplest: practice gratitude!

Whether you choose to keep a gratitude diary and actively write down all the great and small things that you find to be grateful for each day, or whether you just quietly count your blessings and verbalise your sincere heartfelt thanks to people who make your day more pleasant, the important thing is to be authentic in your gratitude. Don’t just go through the motions and hope that positivity will find you. And don’t just be grateful for the big things, like having a roof over your head.

Notice and be grateful for the things that happen moment to moment. You might be grateful for the sunshine on your skin, or the rain on your lawn. You might feel gratitude that your favourite fruit is in season, and is therefore abundant and inexpensive. Perhaps you’re grateful for the lack of traffic, or the ease with which you find a parking spot. Maybe a stranger smiled at you, or you passed a fragrant flower shop, or got a seat on the bus or train, or had a great cup of coffee from a new coffee shop, or your arthritis was less painful today, or you had a great night’s sleep, or.., or.., or….

Every day is filled with wonderful positive experiences to be grateful for – you just need to notice them! And if you truly feel grateful for the multitude of blessings you receive, positivity will surely follow.
