Happiness & Its Causes Conference

Added on June 17, 2011

Being inspired here in Brisbane at the Happiness & Its Causes Conference, and most fortunate to have been at the session with His Holiness, the Dalai Lama today. A major theme through the previous 2 days in relation to attaining Happiness, has been the importance of genuine compassion and altruism towards all human beings. This compassion is often more valuable for the person giving than the one receiving.

His Holiness gave the example of smiling at strangers. He said that giving a spontaneous smile gives him a good feeling; the stranger may smile back, or may be suspicious of his smile. If the stranger is suspicious, he has still been rewarded with the feeling of pleasure at having shared his compassion, whether accepted or not.

This may be viewed as selfish compassion, but he explained that it is not important whether compassion is selfish or selfless. What is important is that theĀ intent be honest, sincere and altruistic.

Compassion to your fellow humans is an important path to achieving genuine happiness.
