Compassion Meditation

Added on August 8, 2011

For those of you who saw the brief segment this morning on the Today Show on Compassion Meditation, there has been much research done on this ancient practice.

The exercise itself is simple and involves cultivating the feelings of true heartfelt and sincere love, kindness and compassion towards people you know and those you don’t. Of course, as in many exercises that are in theory simple, expertise (and benefits) come from regular & repeated practice on a daily basis. The Dalai Lama revealed to an audience in Brisbane recently that he does this meditation every morning, focusing on and sending his sincere love and compassion to all human beings, with honesty and without judgement.

Letting go of judgement is perhaps the hardest part of this meditation. Jon Kabat-Zinn says that if you can’t let go of judgement, at least notice that you are judging. Awareness is at the core of Mindfulness and as you cultivate the practice of being mindful in your daily life, it is just as important to notice when you’re not being mindful. Just as when you first learned to drive you learned to notice when your control of the car was less than adequate, when you learn to be Mindful, it’s important to notice when you’re not – that’s part of the learning process.
