To Be Happy, Connect

Social connectedness is one of the 12 important ways to get lasting happiness in your life, according to Sonja Lyubomirsky. And this is not a new idea. The Talmud says “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I?”

Connect with your family, friends, community. If you feel unconnected, find new and creative ways to address that. One proven way to increase connectedness and happiness is to perform random acts of kindness, and it need not be a big thing. For example you may choose to let someone in front of you in the supermarket queue, give your unfinished parking meter ticket to the person waiting to take over your parking spot, or buy a cup of coffee for the person asking for change on the street corner instead of ignoring them. You may even choose to put to good use some of your free time by helping your favourite charity.

The funny thing about kindness to others is that it often provides the giver more joy that the receiver.



About Judith Lissing

Judith Lissing is a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Wellness Coach, with 15 years experience in teaching stress management and meditation. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Immunology and a Masters degree in Public Health, both from the University of NSW. She is also an Associate Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of NSW since 1999. Judith is trained in Wellness Coaching with Wellcoaches U.S. and holds a Diploma in Hypnotherapy. Prior to coaching professionally, Judith held a statewide management role with NSW Health working with all levels of staff across the health sector.
